In many ways it was a throwback game to so many past meetings between these two teams. The Suns came out with incredible energy and dropped 43 points on the Spurs in the first quarter. Everything was working right in the 65 percent-shooting quarter. A San Antonio team coached by Gregg Popovich and lead by Tim Duncan was not going to let that stand and they held the Suns to just 20-66 shooting in the final three periods.

The Spurs used their defense and interior scoring from Tim Duncan (17 points, 12 rebounds) to overcome an 18-point deficit and cut the lead to within three with under five minutes of play. In the past, the Spurs would have found a way to close out the game and break the hearts of Phoenix fans. Tonight, karma was on the side of the home team as the Suns found a way to close it out even with Steve Nash on the bench for the fourth quarter.

Nash (8 points, 10 assists, 30 minutes) tweaked his hamstring in the third quarter and didn’t return. Aaron Brooks didn’t exactly light it up in his place, finishing with just four points and two assists. All four of those points came at the free throw line from game-extending intentional fouls. Goran Dragic, by the way, recorded a triple double tonight playing for the Houston Rockets.

The Suns only shot 40.2 percent from the field and were led by Marcin Gortat’s 21 points and 13 rebounds. He defended Tim Duncan well and shot an efficient 10-13 from the field. Gortat said after the game that he will most likely forgo playing for the Polish National Team so he can spend the offseason working on his game and his body.

By winning the game, the Suns prevented the Spurs from securing the best record in the league and finished their season with 40 wins. Both coach Alvin Gentry and some of the players felt that it was important  to reach the 40-win mark.

“It’s important for us, you know really for the fans to let them know. We’ve kind of had the fans on a the emotional roller coaster this year where we played well and then we struggled, then we played well,” Gentry said.

Both Steve Nash and Alvin Gentry gave strong indications that Nash would return next season. Gentry said he expects Nash to retire in a Phoenix uniform and Nash said he could see himself playing two more years past his current contract (one year remaining) and would consider signing an extension this summer to stay with the team.

Before the Suns can look to rebuilding and adding more talent to this roster, the NBA will be facing a likely lockout as the current collect bargaining agreement expires on July 1.

Marcin Gortat had 21 points and 13 rebounds, and the Phoenix Suns denied San Antonio a chance for home-court advantage throughout the playoffs with a 106-103 victory over the Spurs in their regular-season finale on Wednesday night.

The Spurs, who at 61-21 finished a game behind Chicago for the best record in the NBA, lost Manu Ginobili to a hyperextended right elbow early in the game.

Had San Antonio and the Bulls finished tied and faced each other in the NBA finals, home-court advantage would have been determined by a random drawing because all other tiebreakers were equal.

Of greater concern to San Antonio could be the health of Ginobili, who went down with 9:46 left in the first quarter. The star guard slid to the floor near the San Antonio free throw line, then the Suns’ Grant Hill fell on top of him.

X-rays for a more serious injury were negative. An MRI was planned on Thursday.

With Memphis’ loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, the Spurs play the Grizzlies in the first round of the playoffs.

Ginobili, Tim Duncan and Tony Parker sat out the Spurs’ 102-93 loss to the Lakers in Los Angeles on Tuesday but all three were in the starting lineup against Phoenix. Duncan had 17 points and 12 rebounds in 31 minutes. Parker scored 12 on 4 of 12 shooting in 25 minutes. Neither were on the court when the game ended.

Channing Frye and Jared Dudley scored 17 apiece for the Suns, who avoided a four-game sweep of the season series.

Phoenix failed to make the playoffs for the second time in three years after a surprise run to the Western Conference finals a year ago, which included a second-round sweep of San Antonio.

The Suns shot out to a 17-point lead in the first quarter Wednesday night and the Spurs never could catch them.

After shooting 65 percent in the first 12 minutes (17 of 26), the Suns made 20 percent (5 of 25) in the second to lead 61-53 at the break.

San Antonio cut the lead to 66-63 on Parker’s short jumper three minutes into the second half, but an 11-1 Phoenix run made it 77-64 when Dudley made a pair of free throws with 5:01 to play in the period.

Down 85-74 after three, the Spurs came back to make it a free throw shootout down the stretch. Aaron Brooks sank two from the line to put Phoenix ahead 106-103 with 3.9 seconds to go. Gary Neal threw up an airball from the corner for San Antonio just before the buzzer.

Notes: Hill became the seventh player in NBA history to average at least 13 points at age 38 or older. … Ginobili missed two games this season, only one because of injury: March 28 against Portland because of a bruised left quad. … Phoenix’s Steve Nash led the NBA in assists for the fifth time, joining John Stockton and Jason Kidd as the only players to do so. … San Antonio had the best record in the West for the sixth time in franchise history – five of them with Duncan. … The Suns won 40 games for the seventh straight season.

Updated Apr 14, 2011 3:02 AM ET

PHOENIX (AP)

The San Antonio Spurs lost a shot at home-court advantage throughout the playoffs and saw a grimacing Manu Ginobili leave the court in pain early in the game.

Not exactly a beautiful ending to a powerful regular season.

”Now,” coach Gregg Popovich said, ”the fun starts.”

Despite the 106-103 loss to Phoenix on Wednesday night, the Spurs are the No. 1 seed in the West and early indications were that Ginobili’s hyperextended elbow wasn’t serious.

Popovich sat Ginobili, Tim Duncan and Tony Parker in a loss to the Lakers in Los Angeles on Tuesday night, but all three were in the starting lineup Wednesday.

”You can’t predict anything and there’s no reason to second guess and I don’t think any one of us are going to do that,” Duncan said. ”Luckily, it’s not serious and hopefully he can be ready to go once the playoff starts. You cross your fingers, you hope for that, and you move on.”

The Spurs move on to a first-round playoff series against the Memphis Grizzlies, a team that seemed to want to face San Antonio.

”They sat their guys for the last three or four games,” Duncan said. ”They’re trying to stay where they’re at. Obviously, they’ve chosen their matchup and want to stick with it.”

Marcin Gortat had 21 points and 13 rebounds to help the Suns avoid being swept in the four-game regular season series.

The Spurs, at 61-21, finished a game behind Chicago for the best record in the NBA.

Had San Antonio and the Bulls finished tied and faced each other in the NBA finals, home-court advantage would have been determined by a random drawing because all other tiebreakers were equal.

Ginobili went down with 9:46 left in the first quarter. The star guard slid to the floor near the San Antonio free throw line, then the Suns’ Grant Hill fell on top of him.

X-rays for a more serious injury were negative. An MRI was planned Thursday.

Parker scored 12 points on 4-of-12 shooting in 25 minutes. Neither were on the court when the game ended.

”Tony’s been under the weather. He got 25 minutes so I thought that was about enough for him,” coach Gregg Popovich said. ”We got Timmy about 30 so that was good. They needed to get a good run and they did so they could keep a rhythm. And then you like to win, but we didn’t and that’s the way it goes.”

Channing Frye and Jared Dudley scored 17 apiece for the Suns.

”We’ve kind of had our fans on the emotional roller coaster this year,” Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry said, ”where we played well and then we struggled then we played well.”

Phoenix failed to make the playoffs for the second time in three years after a surprise run to the Western Conference finals a year ago, which included a second-round sweep of San Antonio.

”It’s been a long year so to finish it off with a couple of victories was good,” the Suns’ Steve Nash said. ”I think it was important for us too for our psyche. It’s a good feeling amidst a lot of disappointment.”

Nash, with one year left on his contract with Phoenix, said he has no desire to play elsewhere.

”This is my team,” he said.

The Suns shot out to a 17-point lead in the first quarter Wednesday night and the Spurs never could catch them.

After shooting 65 percent in the first 12 minutes (17 of 26), the Suns made 20 percent (5 of 25) in the second to lead 61-53 at the break.

San Antonio cut it to 66-63 on Parker’s short jumper three minutes into the second half, but an 11-1 Phoenix run made it 77-64 when Dudley made a pair of free throws with 5:01 to play in the period.

… Nash led the NBA in assists for the fifth time, joining John Stockton and Jason Kidd as the only players to do so. … San Antonio had the best record in the West for the sixth time in franchise history – five of them with Duncan. … The Suns won 40 games for the seventh straight season.

Oh, what could’ve been.

The Suns, the team that disappointed as much as any in the NBA this season, looked as good as any in its farewell Wednesday night.

A losing, lottery-bound, lamentable season ended with US Airways Center cheers for the Suns tying their most mistake-free game of the season in a 106-103 victory over the best of the West, San Antonio.

The nothing-held-back Suns (40-42) had their highest-scoring first quarter of the season with 43 points, their first 40-point quarter since November. They did not make a turnover until the third quarter and had only a season-low-tying six for the game. They defended the Spurs (61-21), who were denied a shot at home-court advantage through the NBA Finals, into 42.7 percent shooting. They even located their former promising center, Robin Lopez, for his best game since February.

“It was important for us too for our psyche,” Nash said. “It’s a good feeling amidst a lot of disappointment.”

It was everything the Suns had intended to be this season but only appeared sporadically to wind up on the outside of the playoffs for the second time in three years. The Suns at least got to 40 wins, making them the only team besides Denver, Dallas and San Antonio to win at least 40 games in the past seven seasons.

“That’s our seventh game,” Suns coach Alvin Gentry said. “But it was a good win for us to end on a note like that playing against a team that needed the win. As I told them, 40-42 sounds a ton better than 39-43.”

The Spurs were looking to get into a playoff rhythm after resting four of their starters Tuesday night in Los Angeles against the Lakers. But it looked more like last season’s playoff rhythm, when the Suns knocked out San Antonio with a second-round sweep.

The Suns averted a regular-season sweep to the Spurs and finished 10th in the West against the full Spurs lineup, although San Antonio lost Manu Ginobili to a hyperextended elbow just 2:14 into the game. Ginobili will be examined Thursday in San Antonio.

As devastating as the Suns were in a 43-29 first quarter with Marcin Gortat’s 14 points, Grant Hill’s 10 points and Steve Nash’s eight points and six assists, they went completely the other way in the second quarter with a string of 14 consecutive misses.

The Suns never lost their lead, though, asserting themselves defensively in the third quarter for a stretch of eight consecutive key Spurs misses, the first half of which were by Tony Parker and Tim Duncan.

The Suns only shot 40.2 percent for the game – with Aaron Brooks going 0 for 7 while the player the Suns traded for him, Goran Dragic, posted his first career triple-double in Houston on Wednesday night. But Phoenix had only one turnover – a third-quarter Gortat offensive foul – until the fourth quarter, when they committed five turnovers to let San Antonio pull within one twice in the final 10 seconds.

Brooks made four free throws and Gary Neal missed a 3 to tie at the end, sending Suns 18-year broadcaster Gary Bender out a winner with tears and a smile.

“It’s just great to beat one of the best teams in the NBA right now and it’s just a good feeling to end up the season with a win,” Gortat said.

Gortat led the Suns with 21 points and 13 rebounds, giving the Gortat-Lopez center tandem 32 points and 16 rebounds. Channing Frye added 17 points and nine rebounds, and Dudley had 17 points and eight rebounds.

View from press row

Grant Hill became the first two-time winner of the Dan Majerle Hustle Award before Wednesday’s season finale and then reminded everyone why he won the ninth presentation of it. Jared Dudley and Marcin Gortat personify the award just as well but there is something about the league’s third oldest player regularly outracing opponents down the floor, defending each team’s key offensive player and communicating more than anyone on the floor that gives him the nod. Suns fans, players, coaches and employees voted for the award.

Report

Key player

Suns center Marcin Gortat had 21 points and 13 rebounds, his 23rd double-double after having six with Orlando.

With Steve Nash out, Jared Dudley created the Suns offense down the stretch.

Just a year after the Suns vanquished the San Antonio monster in the playoffs, the Spurs are back to ending the season for the Suns.

The Suns closed the Spurs’ season last year with a second-round sweep that was as sweet as cane sugar for Phoenix, given four arduous playoff exits to the black and silver dating to 2003.

The Suns’ season ends, win or lose, Wednesday night at US Airways Center. Adding to the frustration, the Spurs can complete a season sweep of Phoenix, which has gone from the West’s third seed last season to 10th place this year. San Antonio has improved from a seventh seed last season to the top seed in the West and possibly the league.

“Knowing San Antonio, remembering what we did last year, they’ll probably play everybody,” Suns power forward Channing Frye said. “But we like it that way. We want to continue to play and leave it out there because this is an opportunity for us to play and go out there and have fun. You never know when is the next time we’ll all be together like this.”

The Suns can’t avoid their first losing season in seven years but can be creative with goal setting. A win to finish 40-42 would make them one of four teams with seven consecutive 40-win seasons, along with Dallas, Denver and San Antonio.

Pietrus plans return

Swingman Mickael Pietrus plans on making a return for the Suns. It just won’t be Wednesday night.

Pietrus will end the season by missing a 12th consecutive game with a quadriceps-tendon strain near his right knee. Despite a diminished role before the injury, Pietrus said he wants to return to the Suns next season. He has a $5.3 million player option.

“I like it here,” Pietrus said. “It was just different for me. I had to adjust during a short period of time. I’d never been traded. Training camp will help so the coaches can get to know me as a player, and I can get to know my teammates. It’s not easy to get to know a player when you’re chasing the eighth (playoff) spot. Next season, I’ll have time to be part of the family.”

Pietrus suffered the injury March 23 when he landed awkwardly after attempting to block a shot. The Suns have gone 3-8 since then.

Pietrus stayed in Phoenix for rehabilitation during the recent five-game trip.

“I can barely walk,” he said. “To play a NBA game is too hard. I wish I could be with my teammates. It’s improving but not strong enough to be on the floor. I have a hard time going up stairs.”

With his option, Pietrus would be one of three wing players under contract, along with Jared Dudley and Josh Childress. The Suns also intend to re-sign Grant Hill.

Nash’s title hunt

Guard Steve Nash seems assured of winning his fifth league assists title in seven seasons.

Nash leads with an 11.42 average. Boston’s Rajon Rondo is second at 11.18. If Rondo sits out Wednesday night, Nash would win without recording an assist. If Nash did not play, Rondo would need 28 assists. Nash, 37, already became the oldest player to win an assists title last year.

Nash needs one made free throw without a miss to retake the career free-throw percentage record from Mark Price.

Free throws

-Â For Fan Appreciation Night, the Suns are giving away a car, $5,000 in Fry’s gift cards, jewelry and a suite to a Josh Groban concert. More than 1,000 fans will receive autographed “Suns Legacy” items, and 20 fans will receive items autographed by current Suns players.

-Â Hill’s 13 20-point games this season are the most by a player at least 38 years old since Reggie Miller had 16 at age 39 in 2004-05.

-Â Brandon Johnson, the former University of San Diego guard who was charged with taking a bribe to fix a USD game, played two games for the Suns’ summer-league team in July.

Apr 6, 2011 - Welcome to the second-to-last edition of the NBA Power Rankings, which will also serve as the official “Adios, playoffs!” Phoenix Suns Edition. With their loss to the San Antonio Spurs, Steve Nash and the Suns are out of the postseason picture (even though Nash didn’t play that game, and that likely contributed heavily to the outcome). It would be great to say this was a memorable season for Phoenix, but it wasn’t. In fact, it was pretty miserable overall outside of the acquisition of Marcin Gortat, the development of Channing Frye, and that’s about it. There are only five players left from last year’s Western Conference Finals roster. Insert sadness here.

As a result of Phoenix’s disappointing play (including losing five of their last six games), the Suns have slid down most of the Power Rankings, generally into the bottom halves with the rest of the lottery teams. Another fun Suns stat: Phoenix has only been to the lottery four times since 1988. That’s a lot of successful that serves to emphasize just how unsuccessful this season has been. They’re also entering the lottery in a consensus weak draft. Anyway, that’s probably enough purple-and-orange pessimism for this edition of the Power Rankings.

In a somewhat shocking turn of events, the San Antonio Spurs’ once-insurmountable lead in the Western Conference standings is dwindling, thanks to the Spurs losing half of their games in March and the Los Angeles Lakers winning all but one of theirs. The Lakers are unlikely to actually pass the Spurs, but it just illustrates how swiftly a team’s fortunes can change heading into the postseason. While the Spurs’ big men have struggled, Lakers center Andrew Bynum has been playing relatively inspired basketball. If he can stay on the court, this may be the year he finally has a huge impact in the playoffs.

Perhaps the biggest post-All Star Break shocker, however, is how well the Denver Nuggets are playing without Carmelo Anthony. They were left for dead after the trade, but they decided not to cooperate and are 15-4 since. The Nuggets, the fifth seed with a clinched playoff berth, are hovering in the top five in most rankings thanks to their hot streak.

Sorry, back to the woes of the Phoenix Suns: departed free agent All-Star Amare Stoudemire helped the New York Knicks get back into the playoffs (oddly enough, in spite of the Anthony acquisition), though the team is hardly considered a powerhouse, currently sitting at .500 and having their recent three-game winning streak preceded by an embarrassing six-game losing streak.

On to the rankings:

SBNation.com | NBA Power Rankings: Bulls Lead, Heat And Lakers Chase
The Chicago Bulls maintain their reign over SBNation.com’s NBA Power Rankings as we move into the final week of the regular season. The Spurs recovered with a win Sunday to snap a six-game losing streak, but the Bulls, Heat, Lakers and Celtics have got to be feeling as if the NBA Championship is within reach. Can the Nuggets join the party? Are the Mavericks toast? Let’s sort it all out.

NBA.com | Nuggets earn a spot in the top five
At this point last year, the Chicago Bulls trailed the Toronto Raptors by a game for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Right now, things are a little different. The Charlotte Bobcats, Milwaukee Bucks and Houston Rockets are technically still alive, but the 16 teams making the playoffs are very close to being set.

ESPN.com | Power Rankings: Lakers still have top spot
There is no change at the top in the season’s second-to-last batch of weekly NBA Power Rankings at ESPN.com. The rest of the top 10, though, has been given a good shuffle.

SI.com | NBA Power Rankings: ‘Melo-less Nuggets surge to No. 4
The Nuggets’ resurgence is the best story in the NBA, and there is the tantalizing prospect that it is going to get much, much better in the weeks ahead.

CBSSports.com | Power Rankings: Celebrating season’s biggest disappointments
So as we embark on the first full week of April, it’s appropriate that we celebrate … the losers. Yep, it’s time to identify the NBA’s 2010-11 Most Disappointing Team. Here are the candidates.

CHICAGO – Discussions regarding the Suns in recent weeks often revolved around comparisons with New Orleans and Memphis. Now they are more in the same conversation with teams such as Cleveland, Minnesota and Washington.

The Suns are just playing out the string, like any other team eliminated from playoff contention. The Suns have six game dates remaining, starting with Tuesday night at Chicago, but their next relevant date is the May 17 draft lottery for a long-shot hope of getting help toward a Chicago-like turnaround.

The Bulls have gone from .500 last season to the top of the East at 56-20 this season, but the Suns would have to win four of their final six games just to finish at .500. They have gone 6-12 in March and April but do expect to have Steve Nash Tuesday night after Nash missed the past two games due to illness. Suns coach Alvin Gentry said he would alter the playing rotation in light of the Suns’ playoff elimination Sunday at San Antonio.

“We’ll change a little bit because I want to see guys play with the starters some in those situations early in the game,” said Gentry, who had a video session with the team Monday instead of practice. “We’re not going to play Grant (Hill) and those guys for long stretches of minutes.”

But as he showed with a fiery halftime speech after a dismal first-half performance Sunday, Gentry will not tolerate half-hearted effort, either. Gentry called two timeouts in the first three minutes of the second quarter to try to stem the tide, a move that proved fruitless as the Spurs outscored the Suns by 30 over the middle 12 minutes of the first half.

“We have to have all our guys playing hard,” Gentry said. “It can’t be just a selective few. The only thing I am obligated to do is to have the team prepared to play, and the only thing they are obligated to do is compete hard. They owe that to (Suns Managing Partner) Robert (Sarver), to every fan that has come to our games. We owe that to Phoenix, and we owe it to everyone in the locker room. That has to be our goal right now, to compete hard and do the best we can.”

Center Marcin Gortat questioned the Suns’ toughness, but forward Channing Frye said the team’s issues have more to do with repeated mental lapses. He pledged that effort and desire to play won’t be an issue.

“Y’all pay me 82 games to play this game,” Frye said. “I’ve been on the bench for no reason, so I’m taking advantage of every chance I got here. I may not play good every night, but I’m going to give it all I have until that final horn is done. Whether we’re in the playoffs or not, we’ve got to come out and take some pride in this uniform. If you don’t want to, then sit your butt on the bench.”

Like Gentry, Gortat said all of the Suns did not play hard Sunday in the 114-97 loss that included the Spurs taking a 31-point lead before the Suns’ 12-0 third-quarter run and 20-5 fourth-quarter run made the score more respectable.

“We need to try to prove we’re a good basketball team and try to get better for next year,” Gortat said. “Every guy has to prove he’s good enough to be in this league and on this team. Just because we’re out doesn’t mean I’m going to show up on the floor and let anybody punk me under the basket. I’m going to be tough and play hard and do what’s necessary to win the game. If Coach lets me play 10 minutes or 30 minutes, I’m going to play hard.”

SAN ANTONIO – Once what seemed impossible was eliminated, the truth about the Phoenix Suns shone for all to see.

Photos from the game | Box score | Game chat

They are not a playoff team and they can be awful without Steve Nash.

The Suns gave into the idea of not making the postseason after a miserable March but their first-half play made it official Sunday, giving into the idea of being even competitive to set the path for a 114-97 loss Sunday to San Antonio at AT&T Center.

The Suns did ABC no favors this season with Nash missing both network appearances and the team getting routed each time. Orlando beat them by 23 in the other ABC game, but this one meant getting embarrassed for playoff elimination, leaving Phoenix out of the postseason for the second time in three years and 14th time in the club’s 43-year history.

The Suns dug their worst halftime deficit of the season at 70-46 by allowing a 44-14 Spurs run over the middle 12 minutes of the half. The 70 points for the Spurs were the most the Suns had surrendered in a first half all season. The Spurs’ bench came within a point of matching all of the Suns’ scoring because backup point guard George Hill was blistering the Suns, starting with drives and moving to the perimeter for 24 first-half points.

“No energy, no toughness, no focus, no intensity at all,” Suns center Marcin Gortat said. “Missing shots is one thing but not playing hard is thoroughly different story. We just didn’t look today like a basketball team. It was really frustrating.”

Suns center Channing Frye said the lacking toughness was only mentally because of Phoenix’s lapses, particularly when a 14-13 lead gave way to a 22-6 Spurs close to the first quarter.

“We weren’t focused,” Frye said. “That’s not acceptable. They jumped on us and we need consistent aggressiveness from everyone. With a team like this, we needed to communicate and talk on ‘D’ and they got too many easy baskets and the hoop was big from there. We need to continue to play with a chip on our shoulder. We need to not get on our heels so quickly.”

The Suns’ defense showed none of the 2011 progress against a Spurs team that had lost six games in a row, giving up another six-minute, 22-point stretch to trail 57-28 midway through the second quarter.

The Spurs’ lead grew to as much as 31 when San Antonio led 83-52 with 8:22 remaining in the third quarter after an 11-for-12 shooting stretch that bridged halftime. At that point, the Spurs’ league-leading 3-point shooting team had made 10 of 14 3-pointers. San Antonio made 15 3-pointers, the most against Phoenix since New York hit 17 on Jan. 7.

“They played smarter than us,” Suns forward Jared Dudley said. “They were hungry. They needed this win and they showed it.”

The Spurs fended off the Lakers’ charge for the West’s top seed by having its three top scorers come off the bench – Hill’s 29, Matt Bonner’s 16 and Gary Neal’s 15. Suns coach Alvin Gentry said “just a selective few” of the Suns played hard and that Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver and Suns fans are owed that.

“We just weren’t playing smart basketball,” Suns guard Aaron Brooks said. “On top of making every shot, they outhustled us. On top of that, every time the ball bounced, it seemed to go their way but that’s what happens when you’re playing hard.”

After having their season ended with a Suns playoff sweep last year, the Spurs are a season finale at Phoenix away from sweeping this season’s Suns-Spurs series.

SUNS REPORT

Key player: Spurs reserve guard George Hill scored 24 of his 29 points in 13 first-half minutes. The Spurs outscored the Suns by 27 in those 13 minutes.

Key moment: After collapsing to trail 35-20 after the first quarter, the Suns gave up a putback basket and an open 3-pointer to start the second quarter and trail 40-20.

Key number: 24 – The Suns’ season-worst, first-half deficit.

Key Spurs subs: Matt Bonner, George Hill, Gary Neal, Tiago Splitter, DeJuan Blair.

Â

This morning’s Orange Slices . . .

Â

* The Suns are in the national spotlight in the least desirable of appearances.

Â

The Suns don’t have Steve Nash, who is home ill with flulike symptoms for a second consecutive game.

Â

The Suns are on the brink of elimination today, whether they lose or New Orleans wins at home against Indiana.

Â

The Suns are playing the motivated Spurs, whose six-game skid is the longest since Tim Duncan has been on the team and has cut their West lead on the Lakers to 1 ½ games.

Â

ABC can’t be happy with their Suns timing this season. They cautiously picked only two games to show the Suns after putting them on the maximum five times several years and have wound up with Nash out for both occasions. Nash sat out the March 13 home game against the Orlando and the Suns lost 111-88 and shot 38.8 percent with Nash hurt.

Â

* Wouldn’t it be something if this Suns season ended with the Spurs sweeping them after the Suns eliminated the Spurs with a playoff sweep last year? San Antonio won the teams’ first two games by a combined 10 games with Richard Jefferson averaging 22.5 points. They close the season by playing again April 13 at Phoenix.

Â

* The Suns were awful offensively the last time they were on ABC without Nash, even though Aaron Brooks had 19 points and 10 assists without a turnover. Zabian Dowdell had six points, three assists and four turnovers with two-for-eight shooting in that game off the bench but has progressed.

Â

On Friday night, it was Dowdell’s second-quarter play that broke the game open for the Suns to stay comfortably ahead for the remainder of the game. Brooks and Dowdell alternated quarters at the point with these results:Â

Brooks, first quarter: plus-2, two points, three assists, two turnovers, 1-1 FG.

Dowdell, second quarter: plus-11, 10 points, three assists, one turnovers, 4-7 FG.

Brooks, third quarter: 10 points, three assists, no turnovers, 4-7 FG.

Dowdell, fourth quarter: four points, two assists, four turnovers, 1-3 FG.

“Behind the scenes I’ve been working and it paid off,” Dowdell said. “That’s something I always try to do, bring energy to the game and be aggressive at both ends.”

Â

Dowdell said his shooting has been his larges area of improvement since joining the Suns, who clearly trust and enjoy playing with him on the court.

Â

“Those guys love playing with me,” Dowdell said. “As a point guard and a player period, that’s a big compliment. I’m very grateful for that.”

Â

Gentry said, “Obviously, you’re not going to replace Steve. But I thought they did a pretty good job running the team and being aggressive offensively and then making plays.”

Â

* Dudley is averaging 17.6 points and 5.5 rebounds in eight starts this season.

Â

* Assist race update: Without playing last game, Nash maintained the league assist lead at 11.4 per game. He actually got a bigger cushion on Boston guard Rajon Rondo, whose average dropped to 11.2 with only five assists Friday against Atlanta. Rondo has been playing with a sore right pinky finger. It would be Nash’s fifth assist title in seven years.

Â

* Free throw chase update: Without playing last game, Nash still needs four consecutive free throw makes to retake the career free throw percentage record from Mark Price.
