At home Saturday night, they were on their way to a loss to the Charlotte Bobcats, the NBA’s worst team that came to Phoenix with a 10-game losing streak, their top three scorers out hurt, the NBA’s third-worst offense and the second-worst defense.

Naturally, it would take Steve Nash and Marcin Gortat to save the day, right? Actually, this night saw Michael Redd go from out of the rotation to being the leading scorer and an all-reserve lineup led by Robin Lopez’s play extend the fourth-quarter lead and send the Suns to a 95-89 victory at US Airways Center.

Redd, starting in place of injured guard Jared Dudley (bruised thigh), led the Suns with 17 points, but that all came before the Suns rallied to the lead in the fourth.

Four of the Suns’ 10 3-pointers came consecutively in the second half, putting the Suns back in front for the first time since the second quarter. The final two 3s came from Markieff Morris to tie score at the end of the third quarter and Josh Childress for the Suns’ first second-half lead at 75-72 with 9:25 to play.

“A lot of guys, myself included, were like, ‘There’s no way we can lose this game,’ ” Childress said. “It was a must-win.”

From there, Lopez came out of a funk — which included him being suspended, benched and barely used — to score nine consecutive points for an 84-74 Suns lead with 5:50 remaining. Lopez finished with 13 points and six rebounds in 19 minutes, his third double-digit scoring game of the season.

“I just tried to go out and be aggressive, the hit the boards and play some defense,” Lopez said. “I was just in the right spot at the time right time in some places.”

The Suns’ past two wins have come with rallies from double-digit deficits against the worst team from each conference. The win also snapped Phoenix’s four-game losing streak against Charlotte, which usually gets a big game from Boris Diaw (13 points, three rebounds, three assists, five turnovers) against the Suns.

The entire Suns bench had a big turnaround from the previous night’s loss in Houston, when the Rockets bench was the difference. On Saturday night, the Suns reserves outscored the Bobcats reserves 40-14.

“The energy level was where it should be,” Suns coach Alvin Gentry said. “We did a really good job of picking up the tempo offensively, and I thought we really picked it up defensively.”

Redd missed his first four shots and then made six of his final eight to score 17 in 24 minutes. He sank four of seven 3s.

“To come back, through the tears, through the hurt, through the hours of rehab, training to come back and accomplish this, is maybe the proudest moment of my career,” Redd said.

Gortat’s 12-point, 12-rebound effort gave him 15 consecutive double-digit rebound games, tying Minnesota’s Kevin Love for the longest streak in the NBA season.

The Suns’ typical second-quarter offensive struggles put them in a 48-42 halftime hole, and it worsened to a 54-44 Bobcats lead before Gentry called timeout. The Suns emerged with a 7-0 run, including five by Redd.

“It’s weird how you play a back-to-back (set) and we had better energy tonight than we did last night,” Suns forward Grant Hill said. “Obviously, Houston’s a better team, but I thought we just didn’t come out with the energy in the first half (Friday night). The fourth quarter (Saturday) was just great basketball.”

Suns report

Key player: Suns center Robin Lopez scored all the points in a 9-0 run that gave the Suns an 84-74 lead in the fourth quarter.

Key moment: After a timeout with Charlotte taking a 54-44 lead to start the second half, the Suns got five defensive stops in a row to get back in the game.

Key number: 10. Suns’ 3-pointers, their second-most this season.

View from press row

It made a lot of sense to give Michael Redd the start at shooting guard Saturday night with Jared Dudley out. Alvin Gentry has wanted to give Redd better time. Redd has been a career starter. It kept rotations intact. The Suns already experimented with Ronnie Price there. Redd finished the Dallas and Houston blowouts well. And despite Saturday’s struggles against Charlotte, that is the opponent to try something new against.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

The Suns’ five-game losing streak has been followed by a two-game road win streak after the Suns grinded out a win Friday night that would be considered ugly if it was not so rare.

The Suns downed Boston 79-71 at TD Garden, marking the first time they have won a game with fewer than 80 points since November 2002 (75-72 at Denver).

The Celtics (5-9) are struggling like New York, Wednesday’s victim, and were without point guard Rajon Rondo because of a wrist injury.

The Suns (6-9) started this daunting five-game trip with losses at San Antonio and Chicago, which entered Friday night undefeated at home, but held New York to 37.2 percent shooting Wednesday and allowed 40.5 percent shooting to Boston. The Suns needed every Celtics miss, as they committed a season-high 23 turnovers.

“Our defense, I know it almost makes you guys pass out when I say Phoenix Suns and defense, but we have gotten a lot better defensively, and the reason we can stay in games now is because of our defense,” Suns coach Alvin Gentry said.

Boston’s “Big 3″ of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen made 14 of 35 shots, with Allen, the leading scorer, taking only eight shots against a defense that began with Ronnie Price guarding him.

The Suns jumped ahead early with NBA field-goal percentage leader Marcin Gortat scoring their final 14 points of the first quarter, a total that matched Allen’s team-high 14 for the game. Suns point guard Steve Nash spoon-fed center Gortat baskets when Boston’s attention was on Nash coming off screens. Still, Gortat also made tough shots, including two hooks and a spin move that would have made his summer tutor, Hakeem Olajuwon, proud.

“I was aggressive,” Gortat said. “Those points aren’t only because of me. My teammates had great position. They spread the floor for me. Steve hit me on the rolls. At the end of the game, maybe I had one or two putbacks. That’s the only thing I did by myself. They helped me to score. Next time, somebody else will score.”

Gortat finished with 24 points, one shy of his career high, on 10-of-18 shooting and added 12 rebounds.

Gortat has recorded seven consecutive double-doubles and posted three 20-point, 10-rebound games in the past five contests.

Jared Dudley (12 points) and Nash (11) were the only other Suns in double figures, and both hit clutch perimeter shots down the stretch. Nash added nine assists.

“He (Nash) is the motor that drives the car,” Gentry said. “He’s everything for us.”

The Suns’ second unit made 12 of 26 shots, helping the Suns stretch the lead to double figures in the second quarter.

The Suns lost their lead in the third quarter when they managed only four points for the first 8½ minutes. Boston had momentum, but the Suns showed resolve, going on a 12-0 run that bridged the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth.

The run included blocked shots from Gortat and Nash and steals by Grant Hill, Sebastian Telfair (twice) and Robin Lopez.

Report

Key player

Suns center Marcin Gortat had 24 points and 12 rebounds, his seventh consecutive double-double.

Key moment

After surrendering the lead in the third quarter, the Suns went on a 14-0 run over six minutes and included two blocks and four steals.

Key number

+14: The Suns’ rebound differential Friday night after entering the game with a league-worst minus-4.9 differential seventh consecutive double-double included average.

View from press row

This probably was why Alvin Gentry was hesitant to throw rookie Markieff Morris into the starting lineup. Morris has been the most impressive rookie big man in the NBA this season but had done it against a lot of second-stringers. His propensity for bad passes continued Friday night. He also did not make a shot, but he gets a pass after coming off a stomach virus and being a rookie. He has proven to be a smart player and will figure things out.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

Plan A was for Aaron Brooks to be Steve Nash’s backup. Sebastian Telfair became Plan B. Plan C would be Zabian Dowdell if Telfair does not work out.

Who knew the Suns would need a Plan D?

With Brooks in China, Dowdell waived because of an injury and Telfair being outplayed, Ronnie Price made his Suns debut Monday as the backup point guard before he even hit his two-week anniversary with the team.

“Every day is getting better,” Price said. “Learning where guys are going to be, where they like to take their shots. Things that point guards need to know.”

Suns coach Alvin Gentry has said he anticipates needing both point guards, especially with a condensed 66-game schedule and a 37-year-old Nash. But after going with Telfair first off the bench in the preseason opener, Gentry turned to Price and stuck with him Monday night.

Suns players liked playing with Price more, and Price brought more defensive intensity that the staff wants for occasional full-court pressure.

Offensively, Price is making the 180-degree turn from the regimented Utah system to a more-open Suns offense.

“It’s just a comfort level of knowing when you do see an open look that it’s expected to be taken,” Price said. “In this offense, your open looks can come early. They can come late. They can come first pass, second pass. It’s something I’m getting adjusted to, but it’s an easy adjustment.”

With Price in, the Suns turn more into a play-calling team by design. He said he will not try to emulate how Nash plays but is trying to study how he gets into the lane and uses passing angles. But as Price’s second-quarter air ball 3-point attempt showed, his defense is his calling card.

“I’m going to try to give whatever effort and whatever I have in my tank,” Price said. “That’s a must. I think we do have a team that can defend. We have a bunch of athleticism, and we have some big guys that can move. A lot of teams can’t say that.”

No sellout

Despite giveaway promotions, the Suns did not sell out their home opener Monday night for the first time since 2005. That is due in large part to the team coming off a losing season and the lackluster opponent, New Orleans. However, the previous home opener to not sell out came after a conference finals season and was against Dallas.

The Suns play at home again Thursday against Philadelphia.

Free throws

The Suns began the season with the same starting lineup that finished last season for the first time since 1990. Then, it was Kevin Johnson,Jeff Hornacek,Kurt Rambis,Tom Chambers and Mark West.

Gentry, on the Suns’ need to be a better post-defense team: “We can’t become a team that’s just going to run around and trap and be in rotations, because that can get you in troubles. We’ve got to do things digging back.”

Suns guards Jared Dudley and Shannon Brown are two of the NBA’s seven players who did not miss a game the past two seasons.

Kip Helt, the Suns’ vice president of game entertainment, is the new public-address announcer. He also has been the Mercury’s public address announcer.

Beyond Steve Nash at the close of starting lineup introductions, the rest of the Suns starters have yet to be named with a week remaining until opening night.

Grant Hill would remain the starting small forward but he has missed practice time with a sore right knee and would be replaced by Josh Childress if he is not ready. The off-guard spot is a battle between Jared Dudley and Shannon Brown, although Dudley has been the star of training camp.

The serious quandary is at the frontcourt spots where Marcin Gortat has put in an average camp, Robin Lopez has been much-improved, Channing Frye is trying to find his shooting range amid his new tools and rookie Markieff Morris has been everything the Suns wanted when they drafted him in June.

“It’s been very competitive at all of our positions,” Gentry said. “I would say the Nash kid has a lock. But most of the other positions, there’s a good battle going on.”

Gortat was a consistent force last season but he has to regain that form soon. There is little concern that he will, but the staff is more concerned with what combinations work best and how to fit in Morris, whose rebounding, muscle and midrange shooting have been an ideal fit.

“What I want to do is what is best for the team,” Gentry said. “I know guys like to start and I know that’s important to them. But at the end of the day, we have to look at what’s going to be best for our team from a rotation standpoint.”

Gentry has been chiding Frye about how his shots have been consistently on line but short. It is not something that will change Frye’s court minutes, especially after he went through the same thing last training camp. He also fits with either center, but could play center alongside Morris. This year, Frye does not feel the pressure of a new contract that weighed on him early last season when he was trying to find his shooting groove.

“I know what my role is,” Frye said. “This year, I know how I can help the team and what I need to improve on. I’ve been working on stuff all summer and now it’s knowing when to use it in the system.”

Frye likely just needs to shoot his way into better shape to be the big man who spread defenses so well last season, when he averaged career highs in points (12.7) and rebounds (6.7). He also has tried to incorporate more dribble drives and off-ball cuts with teams trying to chase him off the 3-point line, where he has made 343 shots over the past two seasons.

The proof of his drive to draw more shooting fouls is on his arms, which have scratches that look like werewolves attacked him.

Frye became a better defender and rebounder last season, too, and continues to make that push. He said he does not need to dwell on whether his shot will return to being “juicy,” as he has been prone to call it when he is hot.

“As soon as I get my legs,” Frye said. “It’s always juicy. Trust me. I’m always ready to rain. I am not shy about that. Just as soon as I get my balance right and my timing right, I’ll be good to go. I know what it is. It’s just me correcting it at this point.”

There is the quick update of the day.

Read More: Marcin Gortat (C - PHO), Phoenix Suns Phoenix Suns center Marcin Gortat had an interesting offseason.

Read More: Marcin Gortat (C – PHO), Phoenix Suns

Phoenix Suns center Marcin Gortat had an interesting offseason. He originally tried to play for his national team in the 2011 Eurobasket Tournament but was unable to compete for Poland due to insurance issues. He later came close to signing with a team in Turkey just weeks before the NBA lockout ended. But before the lockout even began, the Phoenix Suns sent Marcin to spend some quality time with Hakeem Olajuwon to work on his low post game.

Gortat said that Hakeem had 100′s of moves and that he managed to pick up a “couple of them”. He hopes to use some of that improve skill this season, ”We’re going to have 66 games in the season so hopefully I’m going to be able to show what I can do.”

The focus for Marcin, however, remains his defense and rebounding. Physically, he wants to get stronger in his lower back and continue to rely on what’s made him successful so far — heart and determination.

When Gortat arrived in Phoenix he fell into the rotation behind Robin Lopez but by the end of the year, he had secured both the starting job and the majority of the minutes. Lopez, who’s been widely praised for his offseason improvement, sounds like he’s going to battle Gortat for floor time.

“He’s definitely better right now,” Gortat said of his fellow center. “Physically, he get stronger. He got more confidence. He kind of hungry of playing. He wants to have the ball in his hands. It’s good. It’s going to help us. We’re going to compete for the job and I’m looking forward (to it).”

Gortat prides himself on defense and was outspoken at times last season when the Suns weren’t getting it done on that end of the floor. We’ve heard a lot this training camp about the renewed commitment to get stops but we’ve also heard coach Alvin Gentry temper expectations, especially for early in the season.

One reason to be patient is the changes the team is making with their defensive scheme with the arrival of new “defensive coordinator”, Elston Turner.

From the defensive stand point, Gortat said this feels like his third NBA team due to the changes, ”Obviously, Orlando first. Last year (with the Suns) second. And this year, everything is totally different. We’ll see how it works during this season. I believe those changes are good for us. There’s a lot of new rotations. I’m kind of familiar with everything we do because we had similar in Orlando, but end of the day, the results will show if we are better or not.”

The Arizona Cardinals went through a very similar process this year. They hired hired a new defensive coordinator (Ray Horton) and also lost a lot of offseason prep time due to a lockout. The Cardinals defense struggled early in the season but by Week 9 of the NFL season, Arizona emerged as one of the better defenses in the league. Can the Suns do the same?

The Suns have been on a seven-year search for Steve Nash’s backup.

Sebastian Telfair has gone on a seven-year odyssey to find an NBA home.

Now they might have found each other.

Telfair appears to be in line to sign a contract Friday with Phoenix to become the latest Nash backup. The 26-year-old has been in the league since he was drafted 13th overall by Portland in 2004, but unfulfilled potential and hype have sent him through Boston, Minnesota, Los Angeles, Cleveland and Minnesota again.

The Suns made the 6-foot unrestricted free agent their primary-point-guard target as an inexpensive option for a team over the salary cap.

Telfair averaged 7.2 points and 3.0 assists in 19.2 minutes per game last season for Minnesota. He played only 37 games, moving out of the rotation for the second half of the season because the Timberwolves had signed Luke Ridnour and drafted Jonny Flynn. Telfair, an average defender at best, shot 40 percent from the field and 36 percent on 3-pointers.

“We are moving closer,” Telfair’s agent, Andy Miller, said Wednesday night. “I anticipate us being able to put something together on Friday. We’re having advanced dialogue.”

Teams and agents are permitted to talk only about the parameters of deals until Friday, when players can sign. Miller did not discuss specifics, although it was expected that the Suns would make Telfair a one-year offer with a conditional second year.

Telfair, a cousin of former Suns point guard Stephon Marbury, will have to compete with returnee Zabian Dowdell for the backup job.

“He likes the system, (coach) Alvin Gentry and the pick-and-roll basketball,” Miller said. “He likes having the chance to back up Steve Nash and learn a lot from him. The Suns have active big men who can pick and pop and run the floor.”

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

“We can’t hang a loss on one of our competitors (during November),” Casper said. “But we continue to want to play a role in the community and bring out programs that make us feel good.”

A Suns list shows the team officials will hang the orange nets at more than 100 schools and nearly 100 parks across the Valley.

Fans who would like their own orange net can win one of 300 by logging on to Suns.com to sign up for a drawing.

The NBA Players Association and team owners have been in talks about salaries and the length of player contracts but have been unable to reach an agreement, forcing the league to cancel the preseason and November games.

NBA Commissioner David Stern has said he hopes the union and team owners can strike a deal soon so play can begin in December.

Suns coach Alvin Gentry picked the man who he nearly worked for to now work for him.

Gentry confirmed his selection of Elston Turner, a head coach finalist for Phoenix in 2008, as his new defensive assistant coach, a choice that became apparent last week with Jim Boylan re-signing with Milwaukee, Don Newman opting to stay in San Antonio and Pete Myers taking a job with Golden State.

No other candidate had been offered the “defensive coordinator” job, although talks with Boylan also had progressed. Turner was favored all along for how well he would fit with the Suns on two fronts — as a defensive coach on offensively driven teams and with a personality that will not ruffle a coaching staff that already has Bill Cartwright, Dan Majerle, Igor Kokoskov and Noel Gillespie in place.

The Suns are not commenting on the hire until Turner’s contract is done, which should be Tuesday or Wednesday.

Turner has been a NBA assistant for 14 years, the last 10 of which were under Rick Adelman in Sacramento (six years) and Houston (four). The idea of Turner focusing on defense for an offensive coach made him the fit for Phoenix, where he will be in charge of the defense on a two-year contract.

The other assistants’ contracts expire next summer.

Turner will be charged with evaluating game tape and the roster and deciphering what strategies will work best for the Suns defense. He also will be in charge of the Suns’ defensive portions of practice. Each one will now have a committed 40-minute defensive session to improve on last season’s 26th-ranked defensive field goal percentage. Turner is being hired now, despite the lockout, to begin planning with Gentry on next season.

Turner comes on board just as the Suns finally stopped paying Porter, the man they chose over Turner to be head coach in 2008 but fired halfway through his first season. Porter was earning $2.5 million annually.

That’s all for today.

The Suns already are working on improving defensively, even though the draft is four weeks away and free agency is uncertain with a lockout looming.

Until the Suns’ roster can be changed, the attempt to improve will come with a coaching addition.

Suns coach Alvin Gentry is interviewing candidates to add an assistant with defensive expertise.

Gentry has talked with San Antonio assistant Don Newman, former Chicago assistant and current scout Pete Myers and Houston assistant Elston Turner, who was a finalist for the Suns’ head-coaching job in 2008. Gentry also could talk to Lakers assistant Jim Cleamons and coaches who have been involved in the conference finals, such as Dallas’ Dwane Casey, Oklahoma City’s Maurice Cheeks and Miami’s Bob McAdoo.

After finishing the 2010-11 season with the NBA’s fifth-worst defensive-field-goal percentage (47.2), the Suns have placed an off-season priority on improving defensively. Management is backing the notion by allowing Gentry to hire a veteran coach without losing any of his four assistant coaches.

“I’m going to run it like a football team, and he’ll be a defensive coordinator,” Gentry said. “We’ll spend a ton of time meeting the next two to three months to see how we can put changes to be better.

“What I decided was we just needed someone from the outside with a new voice and outlook. It’s not anything against who we have. Dan Majerle played for Pat Riley and was all-defensive, and I do have confidence in Bill Cartwright and the other guys, but we need a new approach because if we’re ever going to be good, we need a whole new voice to be consistent.”

Thanks for visiting our blog =).

Apr 14, 2011 - After years of pondering the “will he stay or will he go” question with Amare Stoudemire, the Phoenix Suns are right back in a similar position answering questions about their remaining star player, Steve Nash. There’s been much speculation from other NBA front offices that the Suns will explore trading Nash and many feel that Nash will ask out of Phoenix. Those things very well could happen, but for now both Nash and the Suns couldn’t be more clear about their intertwined common future.

In Alvin Gentry’s final press conference of the season, he didn’t even wait to be asked about Nash. He walked to the podium, made a little joke, and then addressed the question before it was asked.

“Alright, what do you want to know? Yes, Steve’s coming back so we’ll put that to rest right away. He wants to be back and we want him back,” Gentry opened.

Nash himself has been increasingly clear on the subject over the past few days. Every time he spoke this week his answers became more and more certain. After the final game on Wednesday, he was as definitive as he’s ever been on wanting to return.

“This is my team. This is my home as a basketball player and I want to try and get back to the playoffs with this team and try and build this team into a contender again,” Nash said in front of his locker after the Suns beat the Spurs to win their 40th and final game of the 2010-11 season.

“There’s no guarantees. You can’t just go out and say, ‘Can you trade me to this team?’ It’s very abstract to think about what the alternative is but that’s beside the point. I want to be part of this team and I want to try and take us back to the playoffs with these guys and hopefully be better next year.”

Suns President of Basketball Operations followed Gentry’s press conference with a similarly strong statement of his own.Â

“There’s no change in our position about Steve Nash. He is the sun and the moon and the stars of this franchise. It was a disappointing year for us but it would be hard to say that he was disappointing. He led the league in assists and we see how we play with him and we see how we play without him. As I stand here today, I just can’t imagine a scenario where he won’t be back but there is honestly uncertainty about everything.”

Being an NBA executive and a smart and experienced man, Babby of course left the door a crack open. Some might want to stick their foot in that crack and pry Nash away from Arizona. But that crack is about as thin as you will ever hear from a front office type.Â

Of course nothing is 100 percent certain. But after hearing from Nash, Gentry and Babby it’s hard to imagine him being gone.

Nash had an incredible season. For him to lead the league in assist is one of the greatest basketball accomplishments of the season considering the talent level surrounding him. Despite the injuries which severely hampered his shooting in the final few months of the season he came just a fraction away from once again being in the 90/50/40 club. He finished the season shooting 91.2 percent from the line, 49.2 percent from the field, and 39.5 percent from three.

The key, according to both Nash and Babby, is getting him help and rebuilding the Suns bench which was such a strength last season. Steve played in games he shouldn’t have because he felt he had no choice. That’s just another way of saying they didn’t trust his back up — either Goran Dragic or Aaron Brooks.Â

The team will try and find another go-to scorer either for the wing or the post to take some of the pressure of Nash to generate all the offense and help him to not wear down as much. That’s a familiar refrain and one we heard after the 2007 season when the Spurs eliminated the Suns in five games in large part by focusing their defense on stopping Nash and wearing him down.

Last season the team had finally assembled all the pieces around him and the results were clear. Amare and Jason Richardson were both prime offensive threats and the bench that included Channing Frye and Jared Dudley were able to both defend and score. That all fell apart this season with the mistaken replacement of Lou Amundson with Hakim Warrik and the loss of Jason Richardson as the price for undoing the Hedo Turkoglu trade.

There will be some who feel the Suns should cut their losses now and fully embrace the rebuilding process. It’s a song we’ve heard for several years and one that has a certain appeal. But with Nash returning, along with Grant Hill who is just as likely to be back, this team can improve.Â

If they did nothing more than cut Vince Carter and play a full season with the same unit they would be at least as good as this season. If they can pull off a deal or two using Robin Lopez as trade bait and make a smart pick in the draft they can get back into the playoffs.

Becoming a true championship contender will probably stay out of reach, but it’s obvious that Robert Sarver and the rest of the organization would rather have a decent, playoff caliber team with Steve Nash running the show versus the certainty of a long wasteland that a full tear-down brings.

Then again, maybe some other team will be convinced that Nash can put them over the top and make the Suns an offer they just can’t refuse. We’ll see what happens between the end of the season and the lockout that will mostly likely begin on July 1, 2011. Stay tuned.

In many ways it was a throwback game to so many past meetings between these two teams. The Suns came out with incredible energy and dropped 43 points on the Spurs in the first quarter. Everything was working right in the 65 percent-shooting quarter. A San Antonio team coached by Gregg Popovich and lead by Tim Duncan was not going to let that stand and they held the Suns to just 20-66 shooting in the final three periods.

The Spurs used their defense and interior scoring from Tim Duncan (17 points, 12 rebounds) to overcome an 18-point deficit and cut the lead to within three with under five minutes of play. In the past, the Spurs would have found a way to close out the game and break the hearts of Phoenix fans. Tonight, karma was on the side of the home team as the Suns found a way to close it out even with Steve Nash on the bench for the fourth quarter.

Nash (8 points, 10 assists, 30 minutes) tweaked his hamstring in the third quarter and didn’t return. Aaron Brooks didn’t exactly light it up in his place, finishing with just four points and two assists. All four of those points came at the free throw line from game-extending intentional fouls. Goran Dragic, by the way, recorded a triple double tonight playing for the Houston Rockets.

The Suns only shot 40.2 percent from the field and were led by Marcin Gortat’s 21 points and 13 rebounds. He defended Tim Duncan well and shot an efficient 10-13 from the field. Gortat said after the game that he will most likely forgo playing for the Polish National Team so he can spend the offseason working on his game and his body.

By winning the game, the Suns prevented the Spurs from securing the best record in the league and finished their season with 40 wins. Both coach Alvin Gentry and some of the players felt that it was important  to reach the 40-win mark.

“It’s important for us, you know really for the fans to let them know. We’ve kind of had the fans on a the emotional roller coaster this year where we played well and then we struggled, then we played well,” Gentry said.

Both Steve Nash and Alvin Gentry gave strong indications that Nash would return next season. Gentry said he expects Nash to retire in a Phoenix uniform and Nash said he could see himself playing two more years past his current contract (one year remaining) and would consider signing an extension this summer to stay with the team.

Before the Suns can look to rebuilding and adding more talent to this roster, the NBA will be facing a likely lockout as the current collect bargaining agreement expires on July 1.

Last season, the Phoenix Suns swept the San Antonio Spurs out of the playoffs. It’s quite a different story this year.

Last season, the Phoenix Suns swept the San Antonio Spurs out of the playoffs. It’s quite a different story this year.

The Spurs are headed to the postseason as the Western Conference’s top seed while the Suns are closing out a poor campaign Wednesday night at home.

San Antonio (61-20) still has something to play for in its finale, since it’s tied with Chicago for the best record in the NBA. If the teams are tied after Wednesday, a random draw will decide which team would have home-court advantage in a possible NBA finals meeting.

It’s unclear how important that is to San Antonio, which rested starters Tony Parker(notes), Tim Duncan(notes), Manu Ginobili(notes) and Antonio McDyess(notes) in Tuesday’s 102-93 road loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Coach Gregg Popovich, though, indicated that those players will all likely return against the Suns (39-42) in order to avoid any rust before the playoffs begin.

“It’s a back-to-back, and I’d rather play (Wednesday) and not have such a long time before the weekend,” Popovich said. “(The reserves) got some experience. I’m happy with what they did.”

Richard Jefferson(notes) was the lone regular San Antonio starter to play. The Spurs kept the game close throughout, and were tied with 5:56 left.

“I think it showed the character, the heart that we have, and we’re a pretty deep team,” guard George Hill(notes) said. “We tried to give the best effort we could, and that’s all you can hope for. All of us thought we could win. That was our whole motive going into the game.”

Phoenix was a step away from reaching the finals last season after eliminating San Antonio in the conference semifinals. The Suns lost to the Lakers in six games, though, and after trading Amare Stoudemire(notes) to New York in the offseason will finish with their first losing record in seven years.

The Spurs have won all three meetings with the Suns this season, limiting Phoenix to 33.3 percent shooting on 3-pointers. Jefferson has led the way with 19.0 points per game in the season series while Duncan has added averages of 17.7 points and 12.0 rebounds.

San Antonio, which hasn’t swept four regular-season meetings from Phoenix since 2003-04, has shot 50.2 percent against the Suns in 2010-11.

Phoenix survived a poor defensive effort in Monday’s 135-127 overtime win over Minnesota, which shot 54.7 percent and outrebounded the Suns 45-35.

“Good win, but we weren’t very good defensively,” coach Alvin Gentry said. “Obviously, we gave up 65 points in the first half and they shot 62 percent.”

Channing Frye(notes) set a Suns regular-season single-game record with nine 3-pointers after going 1 for 10 over his previous three games. He finished with a career-high 33 points.

“Tonight I’m just happy the ball went in,” Frye said. “My teammates did a good job finding me.”

NEW ORLEANS – The playoff mission has turned into a player audition.

Brought to Phoenix to solidify the Suns bench in the playoff race, Aaron Brooks is left with four games to play for an eliminated team evaluating his future.

More of what Brooks did Wednesday night at Minnesota would go a long way toward a decision the Suns control. Brooks will be a restricted free agent once a new collective-bargaining agreement is in place this year, giving the Suns a chance to match any other team’s contract offer.

Efforts approaching his 19-point, six-assist game in 26 minutes Wednesday would increase interest.

“When he has his jumper going, he gives us a big lift,” said Suns point guard Steve Nash, whom Brooks backs up. “He can be an explosive scorer, and that can be a great weapon for us. We just want somebody who can play and he can play. Hopefully, he gets more and more comfortable.”

The idea of Brooks getting “comfortable” comes up repeatedly. His comfort zone has been hard to find while dealing with a seasonlong ankle-sprain issue and the in-season trade.

“I’m just trying to get comfortable, show what I can do, what I can bring to the team,” Brooks said. “I just like playing basketball again. It was a drag coming to work sometimes. I’m having fun with it. You see me smiling.

“I want to show I can fit.”

The Suns have gone 9-13 since Brooks’ arrival. Brooks’ results were erratic, but he has averaged more than 12 points in his past 10 games.

“He’s getting more comfortable learning the plays,” benchmate Hakim Warrick said. “He had a little trouble learning the plays and getting terminology and timing.”

Brooks will continue to get expanded time in the final games, when coach Alvin Gentry pledges to limit Nash’s minutes (Nash plays a team-high 33.4 minutes per game).

“It felt good to sustain something so the starters could get the rest they deserve,” Brooks said. “I’m just running the offense, knowing the plays and knowing where guys are supposed to be and knowing my teammates. Me and Josh (Childress) and Vince (Carter) are working pretty well together now.”

Brooks has improved his shooting from 34.6 percent with Houston this season to 46.2 percent with Phoenix.

“I can shoot the ball,” he said. “It’s just about getting healthy. I feel a little bit better now.”

Gentry said Brooks has made “a lot of progress” but wants to see him operate more in the middle of the floor, where he can use his speed to split double-teams rather than get pinned on the boundaries.

“They told me to be me,” Brooks said. “I want to be a better me than what they’re used to seeing. I’m still up for growth. I grew in Houston and I’m going to continue to grow and I’ll continue to learn and become a better player.”
